Usenet

A worldwide network of newsgroups running on top of ordinary telephone modems and the Unix protocol UUCP: thousands of independent computers exchanged text messages by topic on their own, with no single company, server, or owner. It was invented in 1979 by two graduate students at Duke, grew in 15 years to tens of thousands of nodes, and survived an internal split, an influx of millions of newcomers, and the first mass commercial spam without dying: today it is mostly infrastructure for file sharing rather than for discussion.

In brief

It was thought up in the fall of 1979 by two graduate students at Duke University who simply did not want to lose their connection to the Unix world after a campus upgrade. In 15 years the network grew from three nodes to several thousand and survived an internal split over the redivision of the hierarchies, an explosive influx of newcomers, and the first mass commercial spam without dying: the network is alive to this day, it has only changed its purpose from discussion to file sharing.

How it started (the founders)

In the summer of 1979 Tom Truscott, a graduate student at Duke University, was interning at Bell Labs and worked shoulder to shoulder with the creators of Unix. Returning to Duke that fall, he connected the university's PDP-11 to Bell Labs through uucp, a new program in the freshly released Seventh Edition of Unix. The upgrade broke the department's old news distribution system, which another graduate student, Jim Ellis, had put in place. Truscott and Ellis decided not to repair it but to write a new one, and to tie together different universities with it rather than only the computers of a single department.

The idea was discussed at a meeting at Duke, to which they invited Steve Bellovin, a graduate student at nearby UNC Chapel Hill who was already writing a similar program built around the concept of topical groups (newsgroups). They agreed to use UUCP over dial-up modems instead of a protocol of their own; Bellovin wrote the first version in shell scripts, by his own account "about 150 lines of Bourne shell." Because it ran slowly, another Duke graduate student, Stephen Daniel, rewrote it in C, and that version became known as A News. Ellis came up with the name "Usenet" as a pun on "Usenix," which was itself a forced new name after Bell Labs trademark lawyers made the "Unix Users Group" rename itself.

By the beginning of 1980 the network consisted of three nodes: duke (the CS department), unc (UNC Chapel Hill), and phs, the computer of the physiology department at the medical school of that same Duke. Duke became the center of the star: it dialed the other nodes itself and paid the bills, so connecting cost the other sites nothing, and as the original announcement put it, "we avoid phone charges ourselves, and we get news sooner than anyone else." The network was presented publicly in January 1980 at Usenix in Boulder, where Truscott handed out to attendees a text called "Invitation to a General Access UNIX Network": "The first articles will probably concern bug fixes, trouble reports, and general cries for help."

Lesser-known but significant facts

  1. The name "Usenet" is a pun on a pun. Ellis named the network after "Usenix," and "Usenix" in its turn was itself a forced new name: Bell Labs trademark lawyers had made the "Unix Users Group" rename itself not long before.
  2. Announcements of three independent big stories of the computer world went through Usenet, all in the same year, 1991, with 19 days between the first two. Tim Berners-Lee announced the World Wide Web in alt.hypertext on August 6; Linus Torvalds asked for feedback on the future Linux in comp.os.minix on August 25; that same year a Usenet post brought the founder of a publishing house together with Richard Garfield, which led to Magic: The Gathering (the specific group rests on a single source, estimate).
  3. The legendary trio alt.sex/alt.drugs/alt.rock-n-roll came together in pieces over 11 months rather than all at once. alt.drugs and alt.gourmand appeared in May 1987 out of an argument over renaming a cooking group and a refusal to start rec.drugs; alt.sex and alt.rock-n-roll came only in April 1988, when Gene Spafford refused to create soc.sex after it had been voted through, and Brian Reid made alt.sex himself, adding alt.rock-n-roll because, in his words, it was "artistically necessary" for symmetry.
  4. The first serious anti-spam tool produced spam of its own before the real spam arrived. ARMM (1993, Richard Depew), an experimental program that sent out cancel messages automatically, went into a loop and buried the network under its own messages several months before the first recognized mass spam.
  5. The main archive of the era is not freely available today. Henry Spencer's UTZOO archive covers 2.1 million posts, February 1981 – June 1991, on 141 magnetic tapes, but the public copy on archive.org was taken down in 2020 after legal demands that part of the messages be redacted.

The first growth lever

The lever was structural rather than marketing: joining the network required nobody's permission, only a Unix machine, a modem, and a willingness to place the calls. Duke designed the star topology so that it paid for the calls to the other nodes itself, which made connecting completely free for new participants. The software, meanwhile, was handed out in person and at no charge: Truscott presented A News at the Usenix conference in January 1980, and by the very next conference that year the organizers had included the program in the general software package for all attendees. When the network outgrew the star, the second lever worked in the same guerrilla fashion: large corporate nodes such as DEC paid for expensive intercontinental links themselves in order to become hubs, not because anyone was paying them but because it gave them status and control over the quality of the traffic.

What a builder can take from this in 2026

  1. Remove permission as a barrier to entry. Growth began with the fact that you did not have to ask a company or ARPANET for access, only to have the equipment and the willingness to pay your own part of the bill.
  2. Make every new participant carry its own part of the infrastructure: that scales better than one sponsor for everyone. Duke's star topology worked because Duke paid for itself, and did not go on paying for everyone else forever.
  3. Freedom to create subgroups without approval produces explosive but uncontrolled growth, and an almost guaranteed split when the old guard tries to regulate the space. Hence both the Great Renaming and the alt hierarchy as the answer to it.
  4. A tool built on top of someone else's platform with an owner inherits that owner's risk. GummySearch died from a change in Reddit API policy; on a network with no owner there is simply nobody to switch off (see "Parallels").
  5. The "death" of a distributed system is almost never complete; more often its purpose changes. Usenet did not disappear, it became mostly a channel for file sharing instead of a venue for discussion.
