In brief
Usenet is a worldwide network of newsgroups running on top of the ordinary telephone modem and the Unix protocol UUCP: thousands of independent computers called each other at night on their own and passed text messages along by topic, with no company, no single server, and no owner. It was thought up in the fall of 1979 by two graduate students at Duke University who simply did not want to lose their connection to the Unix world after a campus upgrade. In 15 years the network grew from three nodes to several thousand and survived an internal split over the redivision of the hierarchies, an explosive influx of newcomers, and the first mass commercial spam without dying: the network is alive to this day, it has only changed its purpose from discussion to file sharing.
How it started (the founders)
In the summer of 1979 Tom Truscott, a graduate student at Duke University, was interning at Bell Labs and worked shoulder to shoulder with the creators of Unix. Returning to Duke that fall, he connected the university's PDP-11 to Bell Labs through uucp, a new program in the freshly released Seventh Edition of Unix. The upgrade broke the department's old news distribution system, which another graduate student, Jim Ellis, had put in place. Truscott and Ellis decided not to repair it but to write a new one, and to tie together different universities with it rather than only the computers of a single department.
The idea was discussed at a meeting at Duke, to which they invited Steve Bellovin, a graduate student at nearby UNC Chapel Hill who was already writing a similar program built around the concept of topical groups (newsgroups). They agreed to use UUCP over dial-up modems instead of a protocol of their own; Bellovin wrote the first version in shell scripts, by his own account "about 150 lines of Bourne shell." Because it ran slowly, another Duke graduate student, Stephen Daniel, rewrote it in C, and that version became known as A News. Ellis came up with the name "Usenet" as a pun on "Usenix," which was itself a forced new name after Bell Labs trademark lawyers made the "Unix Users Group" rename itself.
By the beginning of 1980 the network consisted of three nodes: duke (the CS department), unc (UNC Chapel Hill), and phs, the computer of the physiology department at the medical school of that same Duke. Duke became the center of the star: it dialed the other nodes itself and paid the bills, so connecting cost the other sites nothing, and as the original announcement put it, "we avoid phone charges ourselves, and we get news sooner than anyone else." The network was presented publicly in January 1980 at Usenix in Boulder, where Truscott handed out to attendees a text called "Invitation to a General Access UNIX Network": "The first articles will probably concern bug fixes, trouble reports, and general cries for help."
Year-by-year timeline
- 1979 (fall): the idea and the meeting at Duke; the decision to use UUCP fact
- 1980: three nodes (duke/unc/phs) at the start of the year; the announcement at Usenix in Boulder, the A News software; by the end of the year, an estimate of about 15 nodes and ~10 posts a day estimate
- 1981: April, ~20–23 nodes (Horton's map); August, ~50 nodes (CWRU joins); end of the year, an estimate of about 150, growth of 6–7 times over the year estimate
- 1982: B News 2.1 (Horton and Glickman), announced at the winter Usenix; about 400 nodes estimate
- 1983: RFC 850 (Horton); the Backbone takes shape (Horton, Adams, Spafford); about 600 nodes, the point where two independent series converge fact
- 1984: Rick Adams takes over coordination of the software (2.10.2), moderated groups are added; about 900 nodes estimate
- 1985: about 1,300 nodes, ~1 MB a day estimate
- 1986: about 2,200 nodes, 241 groups; in March, the NNTP package for transport over TCP/IP instead of UUCP estimate
- 1987: May, the alt hierarchy is born (Reid, Gilmore, Moffett) as a way around backbone control; the "Great Renaming" into 7 hierarchies (stretched from July 1986 to March 1987); December, RFC 1036 updates the message format, while by Reid's own testimony there were already about 8,000 sites and 250,000 readers (growth of "~30% a year"), whereas Hauben/Zakon give ~5,200 as of the middle of the year fact
- 1988: on April 3 alt.sex and alt.rock-n-roll are created; by the Hauben and Zakon series, about 7,800 nodes and 381 groups by the end of the year (Reid has about 8,000 as of December 1987: a different way of counting) estimate

Lesser-known but significant facts
- The name "Usenet" is a pun on a pun. Ellis named the network after "Usenix," and "Usenix" in its turn was itself a forced new name: Bell Labs trademark lawyers had made the "Unix Users Group" rename itself not long before.
- Announcements of three independent big stories of the computer world went through Usenet, all in the same year, 1991, with 19 days between the first two. Tim Berners-Lee announced the World Wide Web in alt.hypertext on August 6; Linus Torvalds asked for feedback on the future Linux in comp.os.minix on August 25; that same year a Usenet post brought the founder of a publishing house together with Richard Garfield, which led to Magic: The Gathering (the specific group rests on a single source, estimate).
- The legendary trio alt.sex/alt.drugs/alt.rock-n-roll came together in pieces over 11 months rather than all at once. alt.drugs and alt.gourmand appeared in May 1987 out of an argument over renaming a cooking group and a refusal to start rec.drugs; alt.sex and alt.rock-n-roll came only in April 1988, when Gene Spafford refused to create soc.sex after it had been voted through, and Brian Reid made alt.sex himself, adding alt.rock-n-roll because, in his words, it was "artistically necessary" for symmetry.
- The first serious anti-spam tool produced spam of its own before the real spam arrived. ARMM (1993, Richard Depew), an experimental program that sent out cancel messages automatically, went into a loop and buried the network under its own messages several months before the first recognized mass spam.
- The main archive of the era is not freely available today. Henry Spencer's UTZOO archive covers 2.1 million posts, February 1981 – June 1991, on 141 magnetic tapes, but the public copy on archive.org was taken down in 2020 after legal demands that part of the messages be redacted.
Legend vs. the record
- Legend: "Usenet was the first social network." The record: Bellovin, in a 2024 paper, puts it cautiously, "arguably... the first social network," citing Quarterman's "one of the oldest cooperative networks," not "the first" without qualification. PLATO Notes is 6–7 years older: launched in 1973, it collected 3.3 million messages in eight years. Verdict: not the first online venue in general, because PLATO Notes is older, but that was a closed system belonging to a single university; what set Usenet apart was not priority by date but the fact that from the very beginning it was a network of independent organizations with no single owner.
- Legend: "The eternal September began in September 1993 because of AOL." The record: the term was coined by Dave Fischer in a post dated January 25–26, 1994, "September 1993 will go down in net history as the September that never ended," about the ordinary yearly influx of freshmen, with no reference to AOL. The AOL gateway only started working in March 1994, two months later. Verdict: the metaphor is older than the fact attributed to it after the event; AOL did not cause the term, it turned a once-a-year effect into a permanent one, which is how it earned its reputation as the culprit.
- Legend: "Canter and Siegel were the first spam on Usenet" (April 12, 1994). The record: three months earlier, on January 18, 1994, a sysadmin at Andrews University sent a religious post out across a multitude of groups; the "Serdar Argic" bot had been publishing tens of thousands of copies of a political text since the start of 1994; and earlier still, in 1993, the anti-spam program ARMM set off a loop of its own messages. Verdict: Canter and Siegel were not the first technically, but they were the first that were openly commercial and that drew publicity (the collapse of their provider's mail server, articles in the NYT), and that is what fixed their names in history.
- Legend: "Usenet is dead." The record: Bellovin writes in 2024 that "Netnews is still around, more than 40 years later," citing provider data on traffic of ~300 TiB/day in March 2024, up 50% year over year. Google Groups stopped accepting new posts on February 22, 2024 and dropped out of the exchange with NNTP servers, but the old content is readable and dozens of paid providers keep working. Bellovin adds a qualification: the traffic today is mostly music and video, often pirated, not text discussions; the closest thing in spirit, he says, is the Fediverse, "fully distributed and non-profit." Verdict: Usenet did not die, it changed its purpose, going from a venue for discussion to infrastructure for file sharing, and the ordinary user no longer notices it.
The first growth lever
The lever was structural rather than marketing: joining the network required nobody's permission, only a Unix machine, a modem, and a willingness to place the calls. Duke designed the star topology so that it paid for the calls to the other nodes itself, which made connecting completely free for new participants. The software, meanwhile, was handed out in person and at no charge: Truscott presented A News at the Usenix conference in January 1980, and by the very next conference that year the organizers had included the program in the general software package for all attendees. When the network outgrew the star, the second lever worked in the same guerrilla fashion: large corporate nodes such as DEC paid for expensive intercontinental links themselves in order to become hubs, not because anyone was paying them but because it gave them status and control over the quality of the traffic.

- Reddit keyword/intent-monitoring SaaS (
reddit-intent-monitor-saas): Reddit's topical communities, where anyone can start a new niche, are built on the same logic as net. and alt. on Usenet, with the growth of topics running ahead of editorial policy. The difference between the eras: Reddit has an owner able to cut off access unilaterally, which is exactly what happened to the largest player in the cluster, GummySearch, which shut down at the end of 2025 because of a change in the Reddit API license. postiz): an open self-hosted tool whose launch deliberately went out across several independent communities at once (Show HN, r/selfhosted, Lemmy) and which can post to federated networks (Mastodon, Nostr), the direct architectural heirs of the Usenet idea of having no single owner. What a builder can take from this in 2026
- Remove permission as a barrier to entry. Growth began with the fact that you did not have to ask a company or ARPANET for access, only to have the equipment and the willingness to pay your own part of the bill.
- Make every new participant carry its own part of the infrastructure: that scales better than one sponsor for everyone. Duke's star topology worked because Duke paid for itself, and did not go on paying for everyone else forever.
- Freedom to create subgroups without approval produces explosive but uncontrolled growth, and an almost guaranteed split when the old guard tries to regulate the space. Hence both the Great Renaming and the alt hierarchy as the answer to it.
- A tool built on top of someone else's platform with an owner inherits that owner's risk. GummySearch died from a change in Reddit API policy; on a network with no owner there is simply nobody to switch off (see "Parallels").
- The "death" of a distributed system is almost never complete; more often its purpose changes. Usenet did not disappear, it became mostly a channel for file sharing instead of a venue for discussion.
Discrepancies and what we could not verify
- Year-by-year growth: closed in the second pass, and it was the main hole left by the first pass. The Hobbes' Internet Timeline compilation gives figures for every year from 1979 to 1988; 1983 (600) and 1987 (~5,200) converge independently with Hauben/Netizens, two confirmed anchor years, while the rest are estimate. Brian Reid's primary reference point corrects the mistaken attribution of the same figures to entry #21: on a direct reading, that document does not contain the figures of 2,500 for 1986 and 5,000 for 1987.
- The exact day of the "eternal september" and the day of the AOL gateway were not resolved by the second pass: Wikipedia says January 25, other aggregators the 26th; for AOL it is everywhere only March 1994.
- The group rec.games.design (Magic: The Gathering) is confirmed by a single source and was downgraded to estimate; the story of the introduction through Usenet in 1991 is itself independently confirmed.
- The UTZOO archive on archive.org is unavailable because of the 2020 takedown; mirrors were used instead.
- The figure of 3.3 million readers for alt.sex and ~41 million for Usenet in 1993 was rejected as unconfirmed.
- The span of the Great Renaming (a flag day in 1987 or a drawn-out process beginning in July 1986) is not confirmed against the primary announcements.
